OFFICERS' TRAINING SCHOOL 
WOMEN’S ARMY AUXILIARY CORPS 



1. fFhat Is the JFomcn's Army Auxiliary Corps? 

It is a corps of women in military uniform ami under 

military discipline, organized for noncoinbatant service 
with tlie Army. It is tlie only women’s organization, 
exclusive of tlie Army Nurse Corps, authorized to serve 
with the Army. 

2. IIoiv Is It Set Up? 

Organization will he along military lines. There will 
be a Director and several Assistant Directors. There will 
he officers, and there will he auxiliaries fwho arc the 
cc|uivalcnt of the "enlisted men" in the corps) who will 
he organized into coinjiany units. The organization of the 
corps will proceed slowly and rarcfully. It will huild a 
solitl foumlatiou for a future cx|>ansion, 

3. Ilou- ir'ill the First Officers Be Selected? 

From among graduates of Officers' Training Schools, 

A candidate for Ofl'icers' Training School must; 

(a) He a woman citizen of the United States. 

'Ill lie lietwecn her 2lst and dSth birthdays- 

(c) Have an excellent character. 

(d) Furnish proof of graduation from high school 
or its cilucational c<|uivalcnt. 

(e) Pass an intelligence test. The standard will be 
comparable to tliat rciiuired for an officer of the 
Army of the United States. 

(f) Submit satisfactory proof of birth date and 
citizenship. 

(g) yuaiify according to tlie height and weight chart 
listed on page three. 

(h) Be phy.sically lit. h'ill out and liave signed by a 
licensed physician the health form attached to the 
cover of this information folder. Candiiiates will 
be cxaniined llnally by Army doctors.

Physical and mental f|ua1ifications: Applicants for the 
Women's Army Auxiliary Corps arc not acceptable who 
have major defects of vision; other than slight defects of 
hcarinK; chronic discharge from the car or cars; ab- 
normal conditions of the thyroid or other tlnctless glands' 
organic disease of the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, or 
genitourinary systems; tuberculosis; syphilis or other 
infectious disease; allergic conditions; c;>ilcpsy; mental 
or nervous disease; and disabling defeets of the extremi- 
ties, In general, an applicant must he in good health; 
able to see well ami have goo<l hearing; her heart must 
be competent to stand the stress of physical exertion; 
she must be intelligent enough to understand and execute 
orders and protect herself; and she must be able to trans- 
port herself hy marching as the exigencies of the military 
service may dcinar.d. 

Decision as to acceptance with respect to physical 
(liialifications will be detorminesl following final examina- 
tion made by Army examiners.

the Nation's combatant forces.

NUTE : Height and weight to he taken without shoes and 
with surgical gown or sheet in lieu of dress. 
Minimum standard for height is S feet, maxi- 
mum 6 feet; minimum of weight is 105 pounds. 

The permissible variation below tlic standard for age 
is IS |x)unds, with the exception that no applicant will 
l>e accepted whose weight is less than 105 pounds. In the 
intei’cst of physical efficiency, the weight should not be 
more than 162/3 percent above the average. In applying 
the [icrcentage variation, fractions of less than '/i pound 
will be dropped ; those of 'A pound or more will be 
counted as an additional pound.

The Recruiting and Selection Boards will take into 
consideration the applicant's : 

(a) I.eadership. 

(b) Moral character, 

(c) Personality. 

(d) Appcaiancc. 

Cc) Tact. 

(f) Bearing. 

(g) Past experience. 

(h) General adaptability. 



4 . Ilow Will llir- Officers Be Trained? 

The initial course at the Officers’ Training School 
will Ik for six weeks. Candidates will be trained mainly 
in leadership, administration, and military procedure. It 
is filanned to accept 270 women, carefully selected from 
all parts of the country, as students in the first class. 

The canflidatcs who most successfully complete this 
course will he appointed officers. Tiie others will re- 
main in the service as auxiliaries. 

This first group of officers will he immediately put 
in charge of the training of the first unit of auxiliaries 
then to be enrolled. 



5 . tlou^ Long Is the Enrollment? 

Tile term of service is for one year, but it may be 
extended by the Secretary of War for tlie duration of 
the war and for not more than six months thereafter. 

The Secretary of War may discharge any member 
for "cause, disability, or for the convenience of the 
Government." 

Members upon application may be given an honorable 
discharge in case of ])ersonal reasons of an emergency 
nature and each case will be decided on its individual 
merit.

6. IVill I Wear A Uniform? 

Kvery member of the Women's Army Auxiliary 
Corps will wear the appropriate uniforms, insignia, and 
accessories supplied by the Government. 



7. Ilow Much Furlough Time Do I Get? 

A member of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps is 
entitled to 30 days leave, or furlough, a year. 



8. What Will I Be Paid? 

While in Officers' Training School, an auxiliary is 
pai<i $50,00 per month. After the course is completed, 
if you arc one of the successful candidates, you will he 
appointed an officer in one of the following grades and 
paid according to the following scale: 

First Officer , $166.67 per month 

Second Officer 131.25 per month 

Third Officer 125.00 per month 

plus quarters anil a subsistence allowance of $0.60 ])cr day. 

]f cjuai ters are not furnished, an allowance of $J0.00 per 
month in lieu thereof will be paid. 

If you remain an auxiliary, you will be paid as follows, 
according to your grade; 

First Leader $72.00 per month 

Leader 60.00 i)cr month 

Junior Leader 54.00 per month 

Auxiliary 21.00 per month 

for the first four months and $30,00 i>cr month thereafter.

9. {Fhal Other Benvftts Are There? 

Comfortable and congenial living quarters, esiiecially 
jilanncd for women, will be provided, and all meals will 
be provided or an allowance paid in lieu thereof. 

Medical and dental services, hospitalization, niedicincs. 
and other appropriate health services are provided at 
Governinent expense for all ineinhcrs. 

Members are entitled to all the benefits to whioli 
civilian employees arc cntiticil umler the United Stales 
Kniployees Compens.ation Act. Members will also receive 
all the benefits provided by the Soldiers' and Sailors' 
Civil Relief Act of 19'10. 

10. Can Civil Service Employees Retain Their 
Stalus? 

Knrolbncnt in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps 
does noi cancel a Civil Service .status held at time of 
enrollment. If you leave a United States Civil Service 
position tor membership in the Women's Army Auxiliary 
Corps, yon can, at the expiration of your cnrolbncnt, 
return to your former position or one of similar grade, 
without loss of your seniority rating. 

11. IT'here Can I Join? 

Go to the nearest United States Army Recruiting 
Station. There your (|ucstions will be answered and 
application blanks piovided. They will tell you where to 
file completed application form. 

Sirtm recruiting is on a regional basis, no 
a/ipliriilioiis sent direct to IVashington can be 
given consideration. 

Applicants ivho have already sent appli- 
cations to the IT'ar Department are advise.d 
to resubmit them to the nearest Army Recruit- 
ing Station. 



12. mixTi- JViU I Serve? 

Units of the corps may be assigned duties wherever 
units of the Army may 1>c stationed at home or abroad. 
Members of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps are 
enrolled for noncumbaCant duties, 

13. What Are the Duties of An Officer? 

An officer will be responsible for the administration, 
training, and leadership of the unit or units which she 
com mauds. 

This means that an officer has not only the military 
obligation of training and teaching the auxiliaries to be 
a disciplinetl corps of women, but also the more personal 
responsibility of seeing that the auxiliaries arc efficient, 
happy, and healthy women, ft is a serious obligation; it 
is a solemn responsibility. 

The degree of success that the Women’s Army 
.\uxiliary Corps achieves will be determined, in no small 
measure, by the amount of sense anti sacrifice the officers 
put into their work,
